Record-breaking turnout for Aldeburgh Golf Meeting
Golf Society

The OFGS Autumn meeting was held in hot sunny weather with a gentle cooling breeze on Friday, 7th September at Aldeburgh Golf Club where we were looked after superbly as usual. This year there was an excellent turn out of 30 members, including two new faces, Richard Binder and Ian Bryce, and one from the past, Colin Micklewright, who was spending a week in Suffolk visiting relations a long way from his home in Cornwall. Once again the overall scoring was excellent as can be seen from the results shown below:

Grafton Morrish Qualifying 2012
Golf Society
The OFGS team played alongside King’s Canterbury at Knole Park Golf Club, Sevenoaks, in the South East regional qualifying round on Saturday 12 May. The weather was fine, if somewhat chilly, with a keen northerly breeze.
The team of Richard Graves, Peter Watts, Charlie Plunkett, Matt Stolls, John Wybar and Julian Benning scored 73 points, finishing in mid-table, and thus failing to qualify for the knock out stages. John and Julian, who were team-mates at the College, were only two over par after nine holes, and scored an excellent 28 points on their first outing at Knole Park.
The format of scratch foursomes, off the back tees on a testing course, is quite a challenge and it is hoped that the OFGS will be able to put out an even younger and stronger team next year, and possibly repeat the success of qualifying, last achieved in 2007.

The OFGS Spring Meeting took place for the third time at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club on Thursday, 10 May. The weather was fine in the morning with a testing wind, and rather wet with less wind in the afternoon. The course as always was testing and in excellent condition. We all enjoyed a good lunch and were well looked after by the secretary and his staff.

Halford Hewitt - Match Report
Golf Society David Turnbull (OFGS Hon Sec) reports:  On Thursday, 29th March we were drawn to play against Shrewsbury, twice winners of the Cup, in the first round at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Deal. By way of preparation, our new captain, Richard Graves, arranged for the team to have practice rounds at the beginning of March and it is hoped that this exercise can be repeated next year.

As usual, it was going to be a very tough match, particularly as four changes had to be made to the original team at short notice due to unavailability and injury.  The team comprised of Richard Graves, Peter Watts, Jonny Newton, Charlie Plunkett, Gavin Cowell, John Wybar, making a welcome return after illness, Robin Anderton, Roger Wharton, Martin Lamb and Michael Spencer. We were greatly indebted to Robin, Roger, Martin and Michael, who all made the long journey down from Suffolk on the morning of the match to complete the team.

OFGS Autumn Meeting Report
Golf Society The meeting was held in ideal golfing conditions on Friday, 9th September at Aldeburgh Golf Club where we were looked after superbly as usual. There was a rather disappointing turn out of 22 members this year due to a number of factors and I am sure that we shall be back to the usual numbers of around 32 when we return to Aldeburgh next year.
