| Golfing Trustees - This time it's Jim Blythe's turn |

 About a year ago, Jim Blythe, Norman Porter (Hon Gen Sec), Peter Liell and Peter Howard-Dobson met to do golfing battle at Royal Worlington in celebration of Peter Liell's retirement as a trustee, and his recent marriage. On that occasion, the match was won by the two Peters: Royal Worlington - 1; Rest of the World - Nil.
Earlier this year, Jim Blythe also retired as a trustee and what better way to celebrate his many years of service to the Society, than to have a return match and give "the rest of the world" a chance to get its own back. So it was that the same two teams met at Worlington on the 22nd September 2008.

| OFs living with the aftermath of Hurricane Ike |

 Update 24 September 2008 : I had a long conversation with Alfred this evening. He was without power for 8 days, but apart from that and some fences down they were fine. After a previous hurricane he had made shutters for every window and he got these up before the storm hit and left them there for about 48 hours. He’s thinking of getting the shutters painted by a local artist to create a bit of a talking point! He said that around 9000 guys from 31 US States and Canada were currently fixing power lines in and around Houston.
Update 20 September 2008 : Andy has established contact with Alfred Molson, who is OK but suffering a lack of electricity and fences. He is meeting up with Alfred very shortly. Chris Essex (K69-75) writes : As part of my role as editor of the Overseas Bag I try and keep in touch with OFs living around the world. When Hurricane Ike hit near Houston last week I contacted Andy Roberts (G73-79) and Alfred Molson (K38-43) to check they were OK. Unfortunately Alfred still appears to be suffering from a loss of power, but Andy has been in touch with an account that really brings home the devastation.

| OF Gifts - Update |

 Update 3 August 2008 : As a result of this news item going out, I’m indebted to Commander John Simpson (K32-36) for sending me a list he put together a little while ago of all the College Prizes, the majority of which were donated by OFs, the SOF or parents of OFs. Original article : Quite a number of years ago a list of gifts from individual OFs and from the Society to the College and Brandeston, was published in the OF Magazine. Using that list and trawled through 1st and 2nd 60 year histories and Trustee and Masonic notes, we have put together what I hope is the definitive list of gifts made. I have included it in the Distinguished section of the website and you can view the list by clicking here.
You will see that the list presents a very impressive picture of the support that has been given over the years and continues to be. The Trustees have under their control a gross fund, The Framlingham College Improvements Trust, which is available if any member wishes to consider the College or Brandeston Hall as a recipient of any charitable donation or bequest.

| Bill Goldfinch and The Colditz Cock - Update |

 Update – July 2008 : Bruce Micklewright (S48-51) has been back in touch to say that a ceremony was held on 19 July 2008, which would have been Bill's 92nd birthday. They 'rolled out' the amphibian 'Son of Colditz'. Approximately 100 people attended the ceremony. Original article : In October 2007 we reported the death of Leslie James Edward "Bill" Goldfinch (26-32), who was a prisoner in Colditz Castle late in the War. We have recently acquired some fascinating video footage of Bill telling the story of The Colditz Cock, the glider he and fellow prisoners built to his design. | Support the HMS Beagle |

 Perry Crickmere (S 74-77) is the administrator for The HMS Beagle Trust based in Pembrokeshire.
He writes: We have the ambitious aim of building a replica HMS Beagle. This remarkable little ship is celebrated for her Darwin voyage also performed amassing feats in survey work and the genesis of meteorological observations (first use of a wind scale given by Beaufort to Fitzroy). She is one of the most important historical vessels in our naval history. Our replica Beagle will not be simply another square rigged sail training vessel. She will be a replica from the outside, but internally she will have full scientific research capabilities and will perform the sort of work that a modern Darwin would do today. We even have a direct link to the International Space Station through our collaboration with NASA. There is lots of information on our website www.thebeagleproject.com. Any of you naval, Darwin or science buffs out there have a look and send us a donation. If any of you are in control of marketing budgets and are looking for a high profile, international project to add your company name to we would love to hear from you. | New Moreau Leaving Scholars Bring Total to Six |

 Dateline 5th July:
There was fierce competition from 19 applicants for this year's awards, but Rebecca Peck and James Pearson sailed through as the ultimate winners. They received their first-year cheques for £800 from Sir Richard Dearlove (College Governor, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge and ex-Head of MI6) on Speech Day, and were later introduced to their mentors after some much-needed refreshment in the marquee.

| Old Framlinghamians Clay Pigeon Shooting Club |

 Robert Norman (S 2002-07 and Moreau Leaving Scholar 2007) writes:
The College has always produced very good sportsmen and sportswomen and many have gone on to even greater achievements. This has meant the Society of Old Framlinghamians has always had the resources to draw upon to succeed in many different sports.
A fine example has been the SOF Rifle Club, the membership of which has recently reached record numbers. Many rifle shooters who developed their target-sports abilities at the College have, in recent years, also competed for the School at Clay Pigeon Shooting. The College team has been East region Champions in 2005 and 2006 and even came third at the Nationals in 2006.
The result has been a large and growing enthusiasm from a number of OFs for an Old Framlinghamian Clay Pigeon Shooting Club.

| Some Updates/Additions to Distinguished Section |

 I thought I’d highlight some recent additions and updates to the Distinguished section of the website. Although I’ve completed my main work on this section, new candidates for inclusion or updates on existing people continue to come along on a regular basis. Fascinatingly, some of this interest arises from non-OFs coming across the articles and contacting us. Here’s a selection of recent updates :-
John English Lott MC (1888-92) Although I had a basic entry on the WW1 Memorial page, I was contacted by a distant cousin of his, who provided much additional detail. She also told me that his ancestors lived at Flatford (Valley Farm) and he was related to Willy Lott, whose house was painted by John Constable in 'The Haywain'. You can read the article here.
Captain Thomas Somerville OBE DSO MC* (1896-1904) I’m indebted to Peter Gasgoyne-Lockwood (R57-64) for researching a very detailed updated, including the fact that he was recommended for a Victoria Cross. The article here includes copies of many documents, including the VC recommendation that became a DSO.
Commander “Jake” Wright DSC** (29-32) He died on 10 May 2008 and this article now includes a link to the Telegraph Obituary. Click here

| College Rugby Tour to France 2008 |

 In August and September of this year, the College will be taking their Senior Rugby Squad on a pre-season tour to the South of France to play against teams from Narbonne, Carcassonne and Perpignan. There will be an official “Tour Programme” printed, which will feature all information relevant to the tour, such as the itinerary, information on the tour destination and the teams they will be playing against whilst on tour, “Pen Pics” of the members of the tour party, letters from various sports celebrities and messages of good luck, etc. Each programme will also serve as an entry into a raffle which will be drawn prior to the tour departing for France.
