Inaugural OF Football Match
Teddy Harrington (S 05-10), one of our SOF Moreau Leaving Scholars, has once again demonstrated his energy and enthusiasm for organising sporting and social events. Towards the end of last year, he set up an OF Rugby event (Of Suffolk XV v OF Rest of the World XV) which gained huge support but sadly had to be cancelled because of the pre-Christmas ice and snow.

Undeterred, Teddy is now organising, and recruiting players and spectators for, an OF v OF football match (once again, Suffolk OFs v Rest of the World OFs), to be held at the College on Saturday 16th July 2011.

Latest Update: If you haven't already done so, please contact Teddy by 28th June if you're interested in playing or spectating. For contact details click on Read More.

Laura Wright stars at Carling Cup Final
Laura Wright (M2002-08)
Ever eagle eyed Bob Williams (Hon OF) spotted that Laura Wright (M2002-08) sang the National Anthem solo before the start of the Carling Cup Final at Wembley on 27 February 2011, between Arsenal and Birmingham City. I can’t at the moment find any photos or video of this.   This is a step up from singing in front of the Portman Road fans, which she has done on a number of occasions.

Pickard – amazing artefact has come to light.

Pickard - small photo

Hopefully most OFs have heard of the war time exploits of Group Captain Percy Pickard DSO** DFC (G26-32). If not, I would encourage you to click here to read all about him (it may take a little while to load as it’s a large file).

Adrian Orchard (G72-79) recently had Pickard’s nephew to stay and amongst other things, brought with him his uncle’s “in case of death” letter. It is an amazing and humbling document and sets out that he would like his son to also go to the College. Sadly this didn’t happen as his widow Dorothy and son Nicholas went to South Africa after the war. With his nephew’s kind permission you can read the letter in full by clicking here.

Surviving Cyclone Yasi
Kiss my Yasi!
I thought some of you might be interested to read a first hand account of the experience of living through Cyclone Yasi which devastated parts of Queensland, Australia.

Click here to read Chris Shaw’s (K51-56) account. I just love the last photo – sums up the Aussie attitude to adversity wonderfully!

Recent OF Sacrifice Commemorated
College Crest
Since World War Two only 3 Old Framlinghamians have given their lives while on active service.   These are Flight Lt Jack Rochford Maulden (R33-38), Flight Lt Daniel Mann (R56-63) and Officer Cadet Karen Buttenshaw (V86-93).

Just before Christmas an oak plaque was put up in the College Chapel to remember these OFs. It is on the pillar on the left hand side closest to the altar and records their names and details – see HERE

FramSoc Membership & Spring Programme Launched
Back in September last year, Paul Taylor announced the launch of FramSoc, “A new society, principally aimed at current parents, to enhance and broaden our community, providing opportunities to meet each other and members of staff in a relaxed atmosphere, and to share the educational and cultural facilities available here”.

He went on to say, “While current College and Brandeston Hall parents will form the principal focus of the society, it will also be open to the wider community, including past parents, teaching and non-teaching staff, and others associated with the College”. This includes, of course, Old Framlinghamians.

After a very successful series of events in the Autumn Term, and the formation of a committee comprising both staff and FramSoc members, the society is now very much open for business, with another full programme of events which might well appeal to Old Framlinghamians.  Most of these will be free to FramSoc members, while a few will be charged for, only to recover direct costs.

Please click on the links to: read an Introductory Letter , see the current Programme of Events , or to download and print a Family Membership Application Form .

You can also read more about FramSoc, and download these documents, on the College Website.

Framlingham Town Photo Archive
John F Bridges (S57-66) writes:

The Framlingham historical photo archive (framlinghamarchive.org.uk ) now has around 420 images, covering nine broad subject ranges.  I have recently added new images including some for the College, in the Education section. The most interesting one, and the oldest on the site, is of the College in 1865.  There is no statue or Chapel present! Although the quality is not good, it is clearly a rare and important image.

Does anyone know if other photos exist from this  period?

Inaugural OF Christmas Rugby Match
Teddy Harrington, writes:

With the inaugural Old Framlinghamian match this Saturday 18th December – here are the final details:
- Players are asked to arrive at 11.30am, to meet your fellow team members.
- At 12 noon lunch for players only £5.00 per head in the Cricket Pavilion.  It will not be held in the Dining Hall.
- At 12:45pm, the players will head out for a practice.
- 1.30pm, head back to the changing rooms and get changed ready for a 2pm kick-off down on Lords.
- 1.30 pm – 3.00 pm teas and coffees available in the cricket pavilion for spectators
- Finally, at about 5.30pm/5.45pm the event will finish.

Update: Sadly, the event was cancelled because the pitch was frozen.  However, the College Caterers laid on coffee and nibbles for OFs who wanted to meet-up for other afternoon activities, which was much appreciated by all.
