| OFGS Spring Meeting Report: Royal Worlington, 8th May 2014 |

 The OFGS Spring Meeting took place at Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club on Thursday, 8th May. Unfortunately, the weather conspired against us with heavy rain falling for most of the day. In spite of the poor conditions the scoring was excellent. The course, as always, was testing and in excellent condition. After a welcome hot shower everyone enjoyed a good lunch and were well looked after by the secretary and his staff.
This year we had a lower turnout than last year, with 22 members. Hugh Curle, with an excellent score of 41 points, won the Captain’s Prize for the best overall score and Barry Hitchcock won the Minter Cup for the best scratch score of the day, 29 points.

| OF sings in front of Presidents |

Christina Johnston-Myachin (V01-06) sung for dozens of European leaders at Prague Castle on 24 April 2014 at the Eastern Partnership summit. Present were the Presidents from Czech Republic, Sweden, Slovakia, Austria, Poland, Georgia, Hungary, Moldova and Armenia, plus the Ukrainian foreign minister and the Belarus Deputy foreign minister. Christina said “It was fantastic to be able to sing in such an amazing building. The president [of Czech Republic] got up to present me with some flowers and said I had the most beautiful voice he had heard in a long time and that when I walked on to the stage I looked like an angel.”

| Halford Hewitt Tournament 2014 |

David Turnbull, OFGS Hon. Sec. writes: On Friday, 11th April we were drawn to play against Sherborne in the first round at Royal St George’s Golf Club, Sandwich. For the third time, by way of preparation, our captain Richard Graves, had arranged for the team to have practice rounds at the beginning of March.
Our squad consisted of Richard Graves, Rob Atton, Gavin Cowell, Hugh Curle, Jonny Newton, Charlie Plunkett, Mike Schneidau, Matt Stolls, Peter Watts and John Wybar. Andy Towler had hoped to be fit to play, but had not recovered sufficiently from an injury to be able to do so.
After the success of last year, the team was confident but weakened by the absence of last year’s top player, Patrick Spraggs, who had turned professional at the end of last summer. Additionally, John Wybar was suffering from an acute sickness bug all day, but played two rounds in the day – a truly heroic effort. Playing against Sherborne was always going to be a very tough match as they are considerably higher than us on the ranking table. Unfortunately we lost 4-1 with Jonny & Matt and Rob & Peter gaining halves in their matches.
On the Friday afternoon we lost in the Princes’ Plate to Ampleforth. In spite of the disappointment of Friday the squad had had a most enjoyable time playing golf in some wonderful spring weather. The team was supported by Norman and Virginia Porter, John Edwards, Robin Anderton, David Turnbull and Andy Towler. The squad stayed in the Pegwell Bay Hotel and thanks are due once again to Andy for making all the arrangements.

| College Shooting Team Gets OF Wisdom |

The OF Shooters once again hosted cadets from the College and Brandeston at a shooting weekend at Bisley. On display was some new technology - wired headsets rather then guns used!

David Ballard (K55-62) recently featured in the Eastern Daily Press when he performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the start of a new care home, De Lucy House.
David, in the blue hat , is Chairman of Greensleeves Homes Trust, which provides care and nursing homes for the elderly. De Lucy House will be Greensleeves' eighteenth home, and the third in East Anglia.

| OF Cricketer "one to watch" |

We are indebted to Nick "Creamy" Horne (S56-61), a co-leg spinner with SOF President Richard Sayer, for spotting that Rob Newton has been named as one of the "ten to watch" this coming cricket season by "All Out Cricket", which is one of Britain’s biggest cricket magazines.

| Charter Ball a Huge Success |

Paul Taylor, Headmaster writes : "The Charter Ball, which was held at Easton Grange on Saturday evening in aid of the College's 150th Anniversary Appeal, was a great success, and not just financially. The venue (which was so generously donated by the Kerr family) was quite superb, and while the main objective of the evening was indeed the raising of funds for our Appeal, it was also lovely to see so many College and Brandeston parents joining OFs and other friends and governors of the College in having a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
We are hugely grateful to the Ball Committee, whose tireless work under the leadership of Mel Dellow made the evening the success that it undoubtedly was. We are also indebted to all those who generously donated prizes for auction, and indeed to all those who supported the Appeal through their very attendance at the evening. Such generosity is very much valued and appreciated, and we are delighted to report that the event managed to raise over £16,000 for the 150th Anniversary Appeal."

| OFs vs OWs Hockey Match – Easter Sunday 2014 |

Nick Whitehead (K06-11) writes “Easter Sunday saw a hockey game between an Old Framlinghamian XI and an Old Woodbridgian XI take place for the first time. It was played on the new astro at the College and saw the return of 12 OFs, ranging from class of 13 to class of 09, face a strong visiting squad of 14 OWs. Furthermore, there were an enthusiastic crowd of around 20 braving what proved to be a rather chilly wind.

| 2 OFs make headlines in EADT on one day! |

On Tuesday 15 April 2014, the East Anglian Daily Times, who’s Editor in Chief is OF Terry Hunt (K68-75), carried two stories on OFs. The OFs featured were Laura Wright (M02-08) for singing on Tower Bridge during the London Marathon and Ed Sheeran (BH96-02) for giving away some of his wardrobe for charity EACH. Also featured in the same edition was the College’s own Kim Frost who ran the London Marathon after nearly dying in a car crash. | Newmarket Supper 2014 |

Renew those friendships; make new ones or just reminisce in convivial company at the Newmarket Supper, which will be held at The Rutland Arms Hotel, High Street, Newmarket on Friday 16th May 2014. Dress informal: 7.00 for 7.45pm, £26.00 per person. Wives and partners are welcome. It is hoped that a representative of the College will be attending the supper to provide us with the latest news from our alma mater.
