Richard Johnson

1927-2010

Richard was born in Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands, in 1927. His father was working there for a UK shipping company, and his mother was French. In 1937 he started at Shoreham Grammar School as a boarder, only going out to the canaries for the summer holidays. In 1940 the ship he was travelling out on was attacked by a German U-boat, but managed to escape. He then stayed in the Canaries until 1943, when he was sent to Framlingham. After leaving school, he studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic, as it then was, but this was interrupted when he was called up for National Service: he then spent two years in the Royal Navy. He briefly returned to Regent Street Polytechnic but student life was no longer to his liking, and he secured a position with UAC, the “United Africa Company”, in the Canaries.

Richard spent his entire working life with UAC, mainly in the Canaries but also spending a year working in London and three years in Manchester. His final job was as the general manager of the UAC company in the Canaries, from which he retired in 1983.

Richard married Olive Bellamy in 1955 and had two children, David and Amanda. Olive died in April 2005. Richard is survived by his two children and five grandchildren.
