Simon Howard Spencer
1947-2009
Written by his older brother Michael:
Simon was the twin brother of David and probably uniquely they shared the House Captaincy of Rendlesham in 1965. They also shared the Senior Arts Prize in the same year, even more remarkable as their natural leaning was to the sciences.
After Framlingham he was taken on, along with his brother, by the Marconi Group in Chelmsford as a trainee engineer eventually graduating as a B.Sc. (Hons). He stayed on when GEC took over and in fact a Ministry of Defence rolling contract was secured by the company purely so that he could work on video systems for the MOD. He was the co-author of many papers and had several patents credited to his name.
In retirement he continued to work on new ideas, lecturing in France with the agreement of the UK government and was about to meet with the MOD to implement his technology in the USA and Europe when he died suddenly from heart disease. All the signs are that much of his work will be continued in his name with the support and backing of the Ministry of Defence.
He developed a keen interest in sports cars from an early age, owning a variety of marques and had announced his intention of buying a vintage MG Roadster older than himself just before he died.
