Maurice Charles Harvey

1911-2009

On his death probably the oldest OF. This tribute to Maurice is based on the words of his daughter Ann Needham.

Maurice had a very strict and disciplined young life and his parent’s desire for him to have a good education led them to place him in Framlingham where he entered in 1925. To this day he enjoyed reading the magazine and latterly the Yearbook.

His father was in the motor trade and, with this background, Maurice developed a keen interest in motor cars of all makes and during his teens had the pick of his father’s cars and often went for a weekend spin with his pals. He realized he had to take his education seriously and, upon leaving school, served his apprenticeship with Vauxhall Motors and later became a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Maurice enlisted in the army in 1939 and, because of his qualifications, joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers with the rank of Captain. Soon promoted to Major he spent most of the war in India, Iraq, Palestine and Syria. It was after the war that Maurice married his dream girl Peggy, whom he had met in the 1930s and they enjoyed 57 years of happy and interesting life together.

In 1948 Maurice and Peggy decided to settle in Africa where he was able to use his engineering skills. 1952 found him working in Dar-es-Salam and later in Malawi and Rhodesia.

Apart from his love of motor cars he was a keen sportsman, enjoying playing club cricket, swimming and table tennis. He was always keen to update his knowledge of the motor industry by reading, attending seminars and testing new models, but his pride and joy was his beloved Peugeot.

He enjoyed a long, happy and interesting life and it was unfortunate that, due to a stroke, he spent his last few months in a nursing home.
