Philip Edwin Giles

1927-2009

Philip and his brother David (G 43-47) ran Sladbury’s Farm at Clacton-on-Sea from the end of the 2nd World War onwards. Throughout Philip’s farming career enormous changes were called for and carried out successfully.

Philip had a love of sport which he had developed at Framlingham, playing in the First Teams for rugby, hockey and cricket. He continued to play hockey after he left school, playing for Clacton for many years. Both Philip and Edna loved golf, were members of Clacton Golf Club, and in 1961 he was delighted to be elected Captain of the Club. In 1971 he became captain of the Past Captains of Essex. They were also members of Frinton Golf Club for 28 years and in 1997 Philip was elected Captain there. He had never had a lesson and for most of his golfing career played only with irons, maintaining a handicap of five. Philip played in the Framlingham Halford Hewitt team for more than thirty years and in 1965 together with Chris Sneath (K 51-56) beat their Gresham’s opponents at the 20th hole in the deciding match to give Framlingham a rare trip into the second round.

He also loved shooting both for pheasant in East Anglia and annually for grouse in Northern England. Philip was a family man, married to Edna for 55 years, a social man and a great host. He was also a leader as witnessed by his successful farming and his captaincy of the various clubs to which he belonged.
