John Arthur Leggett
1933-2009
John was born, educated and lived all his life in Suffolk. He was proud to have won a scholarship to Framlingham and, after completing his National Service in the Army with the Royal Engineers, moved on to study architecture at the Hammersmith College of Art in London. Following a brief spell with Ipswich Borough Council he jointly set up the Leggett/Miller Partnership and later ran his own practice becoming a prominent local architect in his own right. During his term as Chairman of the Suffolk Association of Architects he presented Sir Norman Foster with his award for the widely acclaimed Willis Faber Building in Ipswich.
He was a modest family man, totally devoted to Barbara, his wife for 52 years, their two children and six grandchildren, but still found time to be a tireless lifelong supporter, and chairman for many years, of Grundisburgh FC during the very successful period when they won the Suffolk Seniors Cup. He was also a committed chairman of the Eastern Region Fields in Trust. During 1999 HRH Prince Philip presented him with an award for his special contribution to the National Playing Fields Association.
Golf was also a passion with him, a natural competitor, he was a member of the Ipswich Golf Club team when they won the prestigious Tolly Cobbold Trophy. He became Club Captain in 1981 and later President in 1996-7.
