Timothy Christopher Lingard WALWYN

1935-2007

A tribute from his school friend Bernard Bridges (S45-54)

Tim Walwyn, who was born in Norwich, Norfolk on August 10th 1935, spent his early years in Egypt where his father was an Inspector of schools. Before coming to Framlingham in 1945, Tim had attended Victoria College in Alexandria, Egypt.

Tim was a Mantle Scholar and had a distinguished academic career at Framlingham winning the Packard Prize for Physics in 1952 and the Richmond Prize for Mathmatics in 1953. Tim followed his father to St Catherine’s College, Cambridge in 1953 and graduated with an MA in Engineering in 1956.

Tim was an accomplished Racquets player representing the school at squash and tennis in 1952 and 1953. According to the OF magazine for April 1953, Tim had a tough struggle in his last school match against a Mr. H.E Truman, another distinguished racquets player who was representing the O.Fs. Tim was also captain of swimming in 1952 and 1953 and was the individual winner of the Javelin in the school sports in March 1953.

Following university, Tim joined the English Electric Company in Stafford as a graduate apprentice and when this qualification was completed in 1958, Tim set off round the world with, it was claimed, just $150! He eventually finishing up in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1959, initially working as an engineer for an Electrical Utility, BC Transformer. Tim had a number of senior positions in this industry until he retired in 1993 from BC Hydro, a pioneer in the development of hydro-electricity schemes in Canada and worldwide.

Tim was a member of the Canadian Institute of Electrical Engineers and together with colleagues wrote a number of papers for ‘Innovation’, the Journal of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.

Tim continued to play tennis at the Arbutus club in Vancouver until he was hit by an unexpected illness in 2006 . He also enjoyed a friendly game of golf.

Tim’s love of tennis took him several times as a spectator to Wimbledon and often, when time permitted in the UK, he joined Bernard Bridges’ Sunday morning tennis session at Peppard Tennis Club, followed by a pint of Brakespeares at the local -the Red Lion.

Tim met his wife Margie, in 1960. They were married in 1961 and his son Christopher arrived in 1963 and his daughter Catherine in 1966. Tim’s two grandchildren, Michelle and Brock were born in 1963 and 1966.
