John COLLINS
1936 - 2006
Written by his friend Keith Handley (S47-53):
John was from a Suffolk family and two uncles went to Framlingham in the early years of the twentieth century. He entered the Junior School (then at the College) in 1947 and was a member of the first intake to Brandeston Hall in 1948.
On leaving Framlingham in 1953 he joined Vickers at Weybridge as an aircraft engineering apprentice, qualified as an aeronautical engineer and was involved in the development of the VC10.
He went to work for Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia in the mid 1960s and spent nine years in America before returning to England to work with Quantel in Newbury with responsibility for mechanical design.
John was a lifelong member of a Masonic lodge in London and was also very involved with his local church at Enborne, where at sometime he undertook every role except Vicar.
John’s roots were in Suffolk and he was intensely interested in all matters relating to the County and Framlingham. Our friendship started at Framlingham and continues to this day between our families.
