Peter Yate
1922–2007
His son Paul (S59-69) writes:
Peter was born in Ealing in 1922 and arrived at Framlingham in 1935. Unfortunately his time at Framlingham was shorter than planned due to the collapse of the music halls, his parents business, in the thirties. After leaving he went to work as an office boy in an advertising agency. With the onset of war Peter enlisted in the Navy, seeing service on destroyers. In 1942 he was then given a temporary commission and later as a sub-lieutenant transferred to Motor Torpedo Boats, becoming the youngest skipper at that time. He was based at Brightlingsea and at The Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club in Lowestoft. He saw action from the Baltic to the Normandy Landings and had an interesting crew including a future cabinet minister and the first Dr Who.
After the war he returned to advertising where he had a successful career managing campaigns from whiskey to lingerie, moving in his later years to marketing at Mullard Electronics. As a sideline for many years he ran Peterhouse, a major advertising charity, and was very successful in organising dinners using royalty to encourage leading commercial figures to donate. He married Elizabeth (who survives him) in 1950 and had one son Paul, who also went to Framingham. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing rugby, when young, and travelling Europe in a caravan in his retirement years. In his later years he and Elizabeth moved to Aldeburgh. He died in May 2007.
