Andrew Leslie HARRISON (K56-58)
1942-2007
Leslie Harrison entered the world of horse racing soon after leaving Framlingham and initially trained at Sir John Musker’s stud and Lord Howard de Walden’s Plantation Stud before becoming stud manager at Roger and Vera Hue-William’s Woolton House Stud. He returned to the Plantation Stud in 1972, as one of the youngest stud managers of his day and remained there until the stud was sold two years ago.
He was a lifelong friend of Alex Scrope, a prominent bloodstock agent, whose father Adrian Scrope had been Leslie’s predecessor at the Plantation Stud. Henry Cecil, who trained Lord Howard’s horses, said of Leslie: “We’d been friends for many years and we had some tremendous times for Lord and Lady Howard de Walden. Leslie had a very successful career. I shall miss his sense of humour. He was a gentleman.”
Leslie nurtured, not only the young talent bred and raised at Plantation, but their later breeding careers. Kris, a champion miler of 1979 and 1980, the 1985 Derby hero Slip Anchor, and a talented sprinter Pursuit of Love all found success as Plantation stallions. Kris, the stud’s most profitable stallion, sired five champions and 75 stakes winners.
A lover of art and music he also had a passion for the history of the thoroughbred. From 1987 to 1991 he was a council member of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association. One of the best-known stud managers in Newmarket he was also one of the best liked.
