Patrick HOLDER

1953–2006

His brother Denis (S60-67) writes:

After he left Framlingham, Patrick studied history at Southampton University. Following graduation, he worked in a shipping business for a few years before deciding it was time to travel the world. During this time he had continued to play rugby for the Centaurs club in South London.

After two years spent mainly in China and Australia, Patrick found it difficult to settle back into a routine and before long he was off on his travels again, this time to the U.S. and Australia. During this expedition he met a young girl from Munich, Gaby, and in 1988 they were married.

After a few false starts, Patrick (by this time able to speak a few words of German) set up a bike hire business in Munich, with about a dozen second-hand bicycles. The business flourished, and soon both Patrick and Gaby were working full time as it expanded to include walking tours, tram tours and the bike hire side. It is still going strong today, and British visitors to Munich will be made welcome at Radius Tours & Bike Rental.

In due course the couple had three children, and apart from occasional visits to England, Patrick remained in Germany. In 2000, after a year of ill health, lymphoma was diagnosed and he began his battle with cancer. Unfortunately, despite extensive chemotherapy and other treatments, it was a losing battle, and Patrick died shortly before Christmas in Munich, his home for the last 20 years.
