Mason Walter Harry FAIRWEATHER
1922 – 2006
Mason was born on 27th March 1922 at the Ancient House in Framlingham and apart from two years at college training as a teacher and a few more years in the RAF during the war, lived there all his life. He went to the Junior School and then the College and, when he returned from wartime service, took up a post teaching at the Area School where he remained until his retirement in 1983. During this time he taught Geography and later Rural Science and was recognized by colleagues and pupils as a very influential teacher. His time at the Area School included the difficult transition to the Thomas Mills High School in 1979.
For much of his life in Framlingham, Mason was one of its best citizens, serving on the Town Council for many years as well as participating in the Amateur Dramatic Society - FADS - and the Horticultural Society. But it was his membership of the local Masonic lodge, where he was a member for 60 years, which was his longest lasting interest outside his home.
When he started teaching after the war he naturally met the headmaster’s daughter, Pauline Wales, and in December 1947 they were married. Pauline was the centre of his world as were his children, Marilyn, Wendy and Ian.
