David Crossland DENMAN
1932-2005
David joined Mann Egerton in Norwich as only their second Chartered Accountant following his National Service. During this time he remained in the Territorial Army and played rugby for Norwich RFC and sailed at the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, competing in the head of the river races.
In 1958 he moved to the Kings Lynn branch with his Managing Director and in his own words "reorganized the finances there." He proved himself a conscientious employee with the particular gift of being approachable by everyone. Anxious to get into management itself he accepted a post as Managing Director of Laxhams in Preston, but after eighteen months was tempted back to Mann Egerton as Director and General Manager for Kings Lynn and the surrounding region. In 1969 he returned to Norwich as Group Finance Director.
In 1973 Mann Egerton was taken over by Inchcape and David so impressed the Board with his efforts to get the best deal for shareholders that he was invited to work in London. Soon he was appointed joint Managing Director in Malaysia and after solving their immediate problems became responsible for all Inchcape's overseas trading in Malaysia and Singapore. After 14 years he retired to live in Norfolk.
As well as enjoying his hobbies including piano, photography, gardening and bridge he became a non-executive director of Blakes (Holidays), Norfolk Environmental Waste and a Governor of St. Felix School, Southwold. David was a keen supporter of the SOF and the Norfolk Supper.
