At the time of his death he was assistant County Secretary and organiser of bowls tours worldwide. He was also Chairman of the Kettleburgh Parish Council for 24 years.

A heart attack brought his farming days to an end and he sold Rectory Farm and moved a short distance to Forge House, Brandeston but he continued with his bowling and enjoyed reasonable health and an active life until his sudden death on 10th April.

The funeral service was at Kettleburgh Church on 18th April, attended by nearly 400 friends and family and conducted by the Reverend Graham Vellacott with the sermon delivered by the Reverend Roger Dixon.
