David Henry Gwynne MATTHEWS
1921-2004
Upon leaving Framlingham in 1938, David started work with the Westminster Bank but, like all fit individuals of that generation, he soon found himself in the armed forces. He served with the Royal Air Force, mainly in administration, and for much of the war was in the Middle East.
Upon leaving the R.A.F. at the end of hostilities David returned to the Westminster Bank and spent the rest of his working life in various posts with the bank before retiring in 1981 as the manager of a large branch in Bromley. Both he and his wife, Jean, loved gardening and moved to a house with an extensive garden in Mayfield, East Sussex.
After Jean died in 1995, David’s health deteriorated and eventually he moved to a nursing home near Tunbridge Wells where he died suffering from senile dementia.
