Norman Borrett, arguably the greatest amateur all-round sportsman of our generation, died peacefully at Colchester Hospital on December 10th. He was 87.

The funeral service took place at St Mary’s Parish Church at Frinton-on-Sea, Essex on December 16 and was attended by several past internationals and many others from the hockey world.

Norman, one of hockey’s great characters, captained England and Great Britain at both hockey and squash. He was capped 30 times for England between 1939 and 1950 and seven times for Britain in the days when few internationals were played. An inside-left, he was captain of Britain’s silver medal winning side at the 1948 Wembley Olympics and scored six goals against the USA ands four against Afghanistan. Norman played club hockey for Cambridge University and Taunton Vale.

Undoubtedly he would have been capped many more times but for serving during the 1939/45 War when at his peak.

He played for Essex before and after the war at cricket and later for Devon from 1947-59. He also had a handicap of four at Golf.

Borrett who was born at Wanstead, was a teacher first at Allhallows and then at Framlingham.
