| College student captains England U18 rugby to victory in Europe |
Last Updated: Wednesday, 18 October 2006
|
When we printed a story in Nov 2005 about the College having two great rugby 1st XV seasons in 2004 and 2005, John Birt asked if any of the players had been selected to play at a higher level. The answer is a resounding "yes!!".
James Hurlock R2001-06, son of Terry Hurlock R66-73, captained the 1stXV for two seasons (unbeaten in 2005), and perhaps the youngest ever captain at 16; but at 6ft 3" and 15st 8lbs, he makes a formidable leader. While still at Fram, he was then selected to captain the England Under 18 squad and led them to victory in the European Trophy. James left Fram in July 2006 and is now training at the Saracens Academy. Watch this space to see if he can gain a full England cap.

| Earl & Countess of Wessex to Re-open Athlone Hall |
Last Updated: Sunday, 8 October 2006
|
The Athlone Hall, and its brand-new Headmaster Porter Theatre, will be ceremonially opened by the Earl & Countess of Wessex on Tuesday 14th November.
The Earl and Countess will arrive at noon, and will be entertained by choristers in the Chapel, before moving to the Athlone Hall, where Tony Lawrence and the cast of Les Miserables will perform exerpts of the performances scheduled for the 6th, 7th and 8th December.
The Head has offered an opportunity for a small number of Old Framlinghamians to attend the Opening Ceremony, and anyone interested should telephone the school reception as soon as possible (01728 723789) to ask for their names to be placed in a ballot for tickets - only a very few places will be available, and security clearance will be necessary, so hence the need for speed.
In due course, OFs will have an opportunity to book tickets for the three performance of Les Miserables. Please keep an eye on the website for information about when and how to apply. The new Theater has some 265 seats, and the number available to OFs on any given night has yet to be determined (but will obviously be limited).

| Paula Woolnough to be SOF Liaison Officer |
Last Updated: Friday, 22 September 2006
|
Paula Woolnough, who is married to Nigel Woolnough, Master of Brandeston Hall, has been appointed our first SOF Liaison Officer with the College.
This is a vital role in strengthening the bond between the Society and the College, and in helping to persuade younger OFs of the value offered by involving themselves in the Society. Paula's direct involvement will prove invaluable.
In a message to website readers, Paula says:
"I was delighted to be offered the newly created position of the "Old Framlinghamians Liaison Officer" and look forward to meeting as many OF’s as possible during the next year.
The Old Framlinghamian diary is already a busy and interesting one but we hope to add more opportunities for communication, meeting up and visiting the two schools. So watch this space and do keep on checking the website which is regularly updated".

| Len Evans OBE AO (G42-48) 30th August 1930 – 17th August 2006 |
Last Updated: Thursday, 17 August 2006
|
It is with sadness to report the death of Len Evans, the renowned Australian wine guru. Len died suddenly of a heart attack while collecting a friend from hospital near his home in Australia. Len leaves his wife, Trish and his children, Sally, Jodie and Toby.
Friends of the Evans family have reported that the funeral will be on September 16th but we have no official confirmation.
As tributes fill the media (e.g. "The Times" obituary and "The Daily Telegraph"), Mark Birrell G73-83, who lives near Sydney, summed up the generous amiable nature of Len:
"I was fortunate enough to have had lunch with Len when
I arrived in Australia to live in 1991. He was a bloody fine chap. I went to his Pokolbin property and he gave us a tour of
Rothbury Estate. It was a memorable occasion. To most, Len was the
Australian wine industry, very well respected and admired. He said to
me Australia have the best Shiraz in the world and France were starting
to take note. He will be missed immensely.
Lets all have a glass of wine for Len. Better make sure it is a Hunter
Shiraz though!"

| OFs over-run Bisley |
Last Updated: Tuesday, 15 August 2006
|
The distant rumble of rifle fire which forms the musical accompaniment to the Summer for the residents of mid Surrey must have been mistaken for jungle drums.
Whatever the source of the lure which landed a record number of OFs at Bisley’s Imperial Meeting this year, it was effective.
