David Turnbull, OFGS Hon. Sec. writes: “The Cyril Gray is a knockout tournament involving 3 pairs playing foursomes off scratch. All players must be over 50 years of age and the competition is held at Worplesdon Golf Club in Surrey. We had Barry Hitchcock, who had played a few years ago, and the team was completed by Robin Anderton, Martin Lamb, Peter Watts, Roger Wharton and Michael Spencer.
In Round 1 we beat St Pauls 2-1 – we won the 1st game, narrowly lost the 3rd game and our 2nd pair were one down with two to play but managed an exciting finish to win the game and the match. We then played a very strong Fettes team in the 2nd round and we lost all 3 matches. The boys played well, but Fettes were just too good.
Worplesdon was in excellent condition and it was good to see the President, Richard Sayer, walking the course and encouraging the players. We know that next year we have some youngsters (turned 50) who will eligible and we hope that they will available to play.
