David Turnbull, OFGS Hon. Sec. writes: "Following the recent success of the Halford Hewitt team, the OFGS team set off for the beautiful surroundings of Knole Park Golf Club, Sevenoaks, with high hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Playing with Sutton Valence in the South East regional qualifying round on Saturday, 11 May, the well-established pairing of Gavin Cowell and John Wybar made an excellent start, scoring 25 points. Unfortunately the pairings of Charlie Plunkett and Matt Stolls, and Rob Atton and Hugh Curle were unable to match this, and the team scored a total of 62 points to finish at the lower end of the table, thus failing to qualify for the knockout stages." "The format of scratch foursomes, off the back tees on an even longer course than normal, is quite a challenge. This was made even more difficult by the very strong wind, which made good scoring extremely difficult.
Hopefully the team will be able to build on their success at the Hewitt this year and reach the qualifying stages of the Grafton next year. The team were grateful for the support of Norman & Virginia Porter and Martin Lamb who did their best to cheer them on."
