It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Laurie Rimmer, who died in a care home near Aldeburgh after a long illness. A former England rugby international, Laurie was Headmaster at the College from 1971-1989 and along with his late wife, Gillian, is remembered with great fondness by many Old Framlinghamians.

He died on 31 May, his 77th birthday, and leaves behind his 4 sons, Shane (Z76-81), Drummond (Z72-83), Daniel (Z74-85) and Arran (Z77-87). A Thanksgiving Service was held on Friday 15th at 11.00 am at Aldeburgh Parish Church. Donations, if desired, to RAF Benevolent Fund c/o Moore Bros, 5 Woodbridge Road, Framlingham IP13 9LL Tel. 01728 723448.

Laurie will be fondly remembered as a passionate and inspirational Headmaster. He was much more than just a figurehead at the College, he was the very beating heart of it. Not only did he know every pupil by name, but was familiar with their individual academic progress and sporting achievements. Pupils would always acknowledge him as a fair character who could instill discipline where required, but always had kind words of encouragement for all. He carried enormous respect within the College walls, and far beyond its boundaries during his career. I hold great admiration for a man who worked tirelessly, achieved so much and cared greatly about everything he did. Above all, there's no greater testament to a man who treated us all as if we were his own family, at Framlingham.

RIP Mr Rimmer.

Laurie Rimmer together with his wife Gillian will be remembered with great affection by staff and pupils alike. I joined the staff in the early 70's with Laurie;  his kindness and sympathetic direction were always an enormous support. Above all, Laurie shewed great sensitivity and an understanding of human weakness.  If one was honest with Laurie, he would always show sympathy and suggest a way of overcoming problems,  both with staff and pupils.  I know many people hold Laurie and Gillian in high esteem.  They both gave many years to Framlingham College and Brandeston Hall;   years wihich will not be forgotten.    Michael Baic.   HoD (B.H.)   French / German.  1971 - 2000

My wife, Jill, and I regard it as a real privilege to have known Laurie, Gillian and their four sons. Their sense of family extends throughout the College and Laurie did much for me personally to enhance my career horizons. As a future headmaster, I learned so much from him and he was my obvious mentor.

He did so much to take the College from its East Anglian antecedents and to give it a renowned national and international reputation. I enjoyed much of his modernising zeal and we felt the benefits of improved accommodation in the House, classrooms and, of course, major progress with indoor and outdoor hockey facilities.

The Rimmer family were always generous and welcoming : traits so obviously recognised in the whole College day to day life and work.

I am very sad to read about the passing away of Mr. Rimmer, he was a wonderful man and a great teacher. To this day whilst lecturing in Thailand I still instill into my students certain principles of learning that he taught me, which I have used throughout my life. His family can be proud that his influence as a teacher, mentor, and motivator of people is still being felt far and wide.
