OF Golfers Lose to Merchiston at Halford Hewitt
Golf Society On Thursday, 7th April we were drawn to play against Merchiston, a very strong Scottish school and three time past winners of the Cup, in the first round at Royal St George’s Golf Club, venue for this year’s Open Championship. It was always going to be a very tough match, particularly as Richard Graves, John  Wybar and Patrick Spraggs were unavailable.

The team of Alex Cameron, Mike Schneidau, Jonny Newton, Gavin Cowell, Martin Lamb, Andrew Towler, Charlie Plunkett, Robin Anderton, Peter Watts and Rob Atton lost the match 1 ½ – 3 ½. Jonny and Gavin gained a half and special mention should be made of our final pairing, Peter and Rob, who won 5/4, finishing level par, an excellent performance on a very testing course.

As happened last year, our opponents went on to lose in the fourth round, demonstrating the strength of our opposition. We are due an easier draw next year but, because the overall standard is so high, that is unlikely!

The following day we played in the Princes Plate against St Bees, losing ½ - 2 ½ in a closely fought match.
The weather was perfect again this year and the team was supported by Andrew Wright, Barry Lorkin and David Turnbull.
The team stayed in the Pegwell Bay Hotel and thanks are due once again to Andy for making all the arrangements.
