Robin Anderton (S 54-59) reports that another very enjoyable match took place between the College and the OFGS at Aldeburgh Golf Club on the 9th October.
The College team, led by David Morgan, was a couple of players short because of a flu outbreak, but they didn’t lack enthusiasm. Three of the students, Alex Summers, Jo Jo Hamer-Philip and Katsuhiro Misaki, had played in last year’s match and so weren’t as intimidated as they might have been by the older Framlinghamians, but the OFGS team still went out of their way to help everyone relax.
The format was singles over 18 holes, with the following pairings (OFGS player first in each case): Jonny Newton v Katsuhiro Misaki; Roger Wharton v Alex Summers; Matt Stolls v Jo Jo Hamer-Philip; Martin Lamb v James Simpson; Clive Cooksey v Tom Berry; Brian Evans v Connor O’Leary, and Robin Anderton v David Morgan. Suffice it to say that the OFGS team came away the winners (5½ to 1½) but this wasn’t really the point. It was a fine day’s golf, and everyone had enjoyed themselves. It’s good to know that there are some promising young players at the College, and they’ll be more than welcome to join the OFGS when they leave Fram.
It’s perhaps worth singling-out just one of the College team. Jo Jo Hamer-Philip, who has been captaining the Suffolk Ladies’ Junior golf team this year, has just been selected to play for the Suffolk Ladies first team. She’s no mean player, is off a handicap of 8, and doesn't take prisoners! She won her match against Matt Stolls, adding his scalp to the one she took off Martin Lamb last year. On that sort of form, she has a great golfing future to look forward to.
Robin Anderton says that, for the third year running, Aldeburgh GC gave the teams the Courtesy of the course, for which everyone was extremely grateful.
